Fire Project Reflection
Counting only the research itself, I spent about five hours working on my project. Some of the things I experienced while working on my project was an overwhelming amount of information and trying to figure out how to be concise. For example, the historical context of human experimentation for medical purposes was the most overwhelming since there were many cases I wanted to write about but wanted, instead, to have a focus instead of listing many cases from all around the world.
In order to manage my time, I had to do my work very late at night. In past projects I have worked on, starting early in the day or even the evening meant that I did my research slower than I could have done it. Doing it late at night, I kept in mind the amount of sleep I could get based on the time it was, and as a result I completed my research much quicker. However, I knew I could not rush my research; I had to complete my work to the best of my ability otherwise I would get my paper back with many suggestions to improve it and that would mean more work in the near future. I learned that there has to be a lot of trust between partners. There is a lot more pressure in having someone depend on you; it no longer was just my grade or just me letting myself down because there was another person who was counting on me. It was a valuable experience because I know that I am going to have to sometimes work with others when I am in college and in my career. -Karina Solano Suarez |
I choose my
topic because I felt that many people don’t associate human experimentation as
exploitation because of who it’s done on (people of color, elderly, children,
mentally disabled, etc). I spent around
1 hour each day researching my topic and I was surprised to see the type of
experimentation that went on during the early to mid 90’s. While typing my
paper I faced a lot of challenges in putting my words down on paper because I
didn’t know exactly how to express myself. I managed my time by making a schedule.
I tried to do most of my homework at school and once I got home I set some time
to study for upcoming AP tests and then I worked on my project. I learned from
working with other people that it can be hard to share ideas with especially
since my partner and I were in different classes and while Karina was already
starting on the project I was behind because my classes weren’t working on it
yet. It was important for us to meet afterschool to talk about who was doing
what and when it was needed to be done. My original goals weren’t carried out
since I anticipated working on it together more to bounce ideas off each other.
It didn’t really go as planned but we managed to get it done when it was due. The
project itself was difficult because there are people who will agree with human
experimentation and it was hard to argue that there were forms of exploitation.
Along the project there was a risk of contradicting own point. I would like my
audience to know that even though that human experimentation is not typically
used because it’s unethical in some trials there is other places in the world
who are still medically exploited.
I would give our project an overall grade of a B because our project was missing some parts in the presentation. A skill I feel like I mastered was the ability to research scholarly information for my topic. The skill I need to work on is being able to write a good argumentative paper in order to convince my audience. By looking at our project I am proud the examples we used in order to make our context stronger. A difficulty I encountered was the time I needed to write my entire paper. I was able to resolve my issue by working closely with my partner and splitting our work even further to make sure we would finish. I wish I would have approached my project earlier instead of procrastinating to the end to try to finish it. By looking at my overall project I wish I could change how our paragraphs were located. I believe it would have made it easier to understand. The source that helped me the most was Google scholar. A piece of advice I would give to the next upcoming class is to choose a topic that they’re truly passionate about because they’re going to work on it for a long period. I would also tell them not to procrastinate on the project and to do a little everyday just so they won’t fall behind. -Mayra Moreno |
